The entrepreneur life isn’t all Lamborghini selfies.

I was obliquely familiar with pain up until this point because the bulk of my online business relates to writing.

I knew of pain. But I didn’t know pain directly. At least, not like this. Chronic pain is forcing me to flip my entire business model upside-down.

Normally, pain and writing go hand-in-hand — especially copywriting.

If you’re like me, you want to start or grow your own online business not only for the money, but also for the freedom. Online entrepreneurship absolutely has its challenges, but when it works, you get to do the work you love, leapfrog corporate bullshit, and make money on your time and your terms.

Clearly, you and I are not alone in our desires for autonomy: One in three Americans have a side hustle, and the events of the last 18 months have millions of people rethinking their careers.

With everyone suddenly spending far more time online, a huge untapped…

“I just landed a paid column in Yoga Journal!”

That was what a text I received last week from a former client said. We worked together last year and created a strategy on how she could better market herself, and now she’s left the nest and lands new opportunities all on her own.

The text felt good. And — it was a complete 180 from the usual snake oil and hot air I’d experienced in PR culture.

Just a few years ago, I was at a startup PR agency focusing on content. …

Find your “square squad” and hold ’em close.

I recently stumbled across an article in the Harvard Business Review about how to stop worrying about what other people think of you.

No, really — that’s the title of the article. In How to Stop Worrying About What Other People Think of You, psychologist Michael Gervais digs into the phenomenon of social approval and how it can affect our day-to-day performance, productivity, and well-being.

I dove in. And to my pleasant surprise, Gervais cited an analogy from shame and vulnerability researcher Dr. Brené Brown. Dr. …

Pop quiz.

Let’s say there’s a website that gets adopted and embraced by a marginalized community — in this case, sex workers and professionals in other sex-adjacent industries.

No investor will touch them because of the demographics of their early adopters, so they have to get scrappy.

The Creator Economy

Want a book deal or brand contract someday? Here’s what you need to prioritize.

Four score and seven rapid COVID tests ago, I attended a business mastermind here in Los Angeles. And over the course of the weekend, I learned new insights on the dynamic between traditional media and the creator economy that have me dramatically altering the direction of my online business.

Masterminds — usually defined as intensives, retreats, or even year-long programs with a “surround yourself with like-minded people” value proposition — can be tricky. The prices are often sky-high, and most of what you’re paying for is an amorphous “being in the room” deliverable. …

Has the Olympics become a mental health minefield?

Simone Biles — a 24-year-old American gymnast with four moves named after her, an athlete reared in a gymnastics training environment steeped in sexual abuse and convictions, an athlete whose moves are scored controversially by the International Gymnastics Federation, a daughter who as a child had to overcome food insecurity before entering the foster care system, an athlete whose name plus the word GOAT yields 10.9 million search results on Google — withdrew mid-competition from the Olympics team gymnastics final this week, citing her mental health.

People have opinions about it. And some of these opinions are, frankly, a mood.

I received a memo from my editor at Entrepreneur magazine last month. “Do not use the term “six figures” in article headlines moving forward,” it said. This was a memo to everyone who writes for Entrepreneur.

It makes sense. The term “six figures” is now so overused in online business that it’s considered scammy — even though it refers to an objective number. Six figures seems to be a hallowed benchmark in entrepreneurship because it implies you at least know what you’re doing.

But it’s also confusing. Sure, someone gloats to you in an article that they’re making six figures……

Now that employers are (cautiously) rolling out their reopening plans, professionals are deciding whether or not they want to continue working from home — as well as how to negotiate these arrangements.

The Great Resignation is in full swing, with 4 million Americans quitting their jobs in April 2021 alone. A survey from conducted last month found that an astonishing 95% of workers are considering changing jobs. …
